Out of a love for nature, for herbs and for live music. Out of festival evenings under an open sky. Out of meeting artists, musicians, makers and people who carry something of their own with them. Out of that particular atmosphere that appears when music, art, nature and community gather in one place.
BILKARiUM is an attempt to carry a piece of that world into the heart of Sofia.
From festival culture to a different kind of space in Sofia
Much of the inspiration behind BILKARiUM comes from the people and the artists of festival culture.
It is a world where the line between audience and performer often disappears. One person plays, another paints, a third is making something with their hands, and someone else simply sits nearby and enjoys the moment.
That is exactly the feeling we wanted to keep.
Not to open one more bar in Sofia, but a space for meeting, music, making and new ideas. A place where you come in for a herbal elixir and find yourself at an acoustic concert. Where you step in for tea and stay for a talk. Where you meet a painter, a musician, a traveller, or someone with an idea for the next event.
A space comes alive not because of its walls, but because of the energy passing through it.
Inspired by nature
Nature is at the root of BILKARiUM. That is why our bar is a different one.
Instead of classic bar culture, we are building a menu around herbs, teas, homemade lemonades, herbal elixirs and original alcohol-free cocktails. We draw on plants, on the seasons, on traditional herbal knowledge and on the contemporary culture of drinks without alcohol.
We look for flavours with character:
- fresh and floral
- bitter and earthy
- sour and fruity
- spiced, for wide-awake evenings
Drinks that are not merely something to hold while you talk, but part of the experience itself.
That is where the idea of a herbal bar in Sofia comes from: one where nature is not decoration, but part of what the place is.
A space for artists
BILKARiUM was also made as an artistic space. Not necessarily a big stage with floodlights and distance between the performer and the room.
A close stage, rather. One where you can hear the strings, the voice and the breath of the musician.
We want this to be a home for acoustic concerts, live music, DJ and ethno sets, lectures, conversations, creative workshops, exhibitions, practices and independent formats of every kind. Musicians, visual artists, craftspeople, speakers, travellers and people building something new.
Part of the spirit of BILKARiUM comes from exactly that community. From the festivals. From improvised stages. From fire, music and talking late. From the feeling that strangers can become a community over a single evening.
More than a herbal bar
This is why the word "bar" will never quite be enough for BILKARiUM. Yes, there is a bar. But there is also a space for events, conversation, celebration and ideas.
BILKARiUM can host a concert, a creative workshop, a lecture, a birthday, a company event, a team gathering or a private celebration.
And if you have an idea for an event that fits none of those categories, so much the better. Tell us about it.
A small refuge from the rhythm of the city
Sofia is loud, fast and always in motion. Sometimes that is precisely why we need a space where time moves a little differently.
- To sit among plants.
- To hear music played live.
- To drink something made from herbs.
- To put the phone down for a while.
- To talk to someone you did not know an hour ago.
And perhaps to leave with a new idea, a new friend, or a new song in your head.
That is the feeling we are after. Not perfection. Life.
BILKARiUM is only beginning to write its story
The story of BILKARiUM does not end when the doors open. That is where it starts.
Because we want the place to change along with the people who come to it. Every artist will leave something behind. Every concert will add a memory. Every exhibition, workshop, conversation and chance meeting will be one more small layer in the character of the space.
A community born of festival culture, inspired by herbs, and made to share knowledge, creativity and experience.
